how important is it to get the best CPU cooler, or can this still be achieved by a lesser cooler that is 3 degrees hotter on full load......

i.e a cooler that's in 5th place rather than 1st. ......

thanks

Not important at all, any after market cooler will be better then the intel or amd stock ones.

A good example of this is the arctic cooling freezer 7 pro, this costs less then £20 and has to be the best value cooler of all time, extremly good performance for the money.

The only difference between that and the top end £40 coolers is the the overal load temps will be lower with the top end coolers.

So its all a matter of what your happy with, coolers that are usually ranked no 1 are there for performance ratings, so one ranked like 5th will sill have excellent cooling.

yes, the trouble is i'm getting obsessed with coolers :D:D

serious overclocking is for water cooling only, as you've said... because in reality, i'd probably be happy with 3.6 or 3.8 Ghz

You have to define your terms better. If the question is 'what cooler is required to cool a 3.8ghz i7' then the answer is very different to 'is cooling important'.

I think serious overclocking is below ambient, normal is water and budget is air :)

I class it as you wouldn't want to touch the stuff your pouring into your computer. :D
