For all you mechanical types - what is wrong in this picture?

No idea. I'm guessing it sheared off years ago and whoever owned the car at the time simply threw it away and decided to see if the car still worked. It did

it was done some time ago, back when the car left the factory many golfs are like that its nothing to worry about.

If it did break then that's just way too clean for it to have snapped off, isn't it?

I'd say it either broke off and then somebody cleaned it all up to tidy it up or as another person has suggested it's supposed to be like that but then again what little I know about mechanics can be summed up by a 13mm spanner :D

Interesting if that's true - I've had a lot of Golfs in bits over the years but never seen one with a bearing cap missing from the head casting.

EDIT
Yep - just been trawling some forums and it looks like you are indeed correct - what a bizarre concept and that's a totally new one on me. Wonder why VW decided the 4th cap was unecessary? They're even numbered 1,2,3 and 5!

Hmm, must be a revision at some stage of production, where they started removing it after casting.

Maybe is about oil flow? Cooling? Resonance? Or my favourite; that one kept ceasing.
