Hi o wise ones out there, im about to buy the kit to build an i7 Devils canyon 4.0mhz rig with an asus z97 pro gamer, along with probably 8gb ram as its for games im guessing 16gb is overkill. Im gonna get a good cpu fan maybe a Thermalright c5 and am a bit confused as to what ddr speed ram to buy. Ile be overclocking to a modest 4.4-4.5 if it will let me. Wondering if i buy standard 1600mhz and im guessing again will be automatically overclocked with the processor. Or do i maybe buy a set of say 1866mhz and see if that runs. Hope you can help as dont want to buy the wrong ram and get the Beep of death when i run it.

More than 8GB isn't overkill for some games these days. Of course it would be nice if 10/12GB kits were also available, not just 16GB. But RAM is so cheap right now. In 2013 an 8GB kit cost the same as a 16GB kit now.

DDR3, anything from 1600-2400MHz. And make sure the heatsinks on the RAM aren't very tall, depending on the CPU cooler you go for.

By default, Z97 motherboards run memory at 1333 or 1600MHz. You just enable XMP in the BIOS to set the memory's actual rated speed.
