Why have organsations started using this in adverts instead of just using a web address? It seems entirely daft and runs the risk of a competitor or something else appearing before them in the search results when people look for them if somebody else is rather better at SEO than they are...

Latest example is the DVLA with an advert for road tax.

'For more information, search online for road tax'

Yea, because thats easier than going to dvla.gov.uk

Easier for people to remeber a few key words to lob in a search engine that to remember a domain name perhaps?

You're right though, put the keywords in a different order and someone else has your customer!

It's a case of, 'i'm joe bloggs, I can't remember all the .gov.com.whatnot, so I just type it into google. damn techno-babble.'

Also I can't think of anywhere else someone sensible would go for information on road tax other than the DVLA.

When I get my car tax I just type "car tax" in google then I clck the relevent link, less typing

Apart from a number of other reasons, it lets them more easily see how many people have responded to the advert. If they just gave out the normal URL then they may see a rise in traffic, but it would be difficult to attribute it specifically to the advert. If they see a rise on one keyword they know it's from that advert.

A lot of people use Google as their address bar these days.
You'll see people type 'hotmail.com' into google.

Sounds a lot like in the old days, where you could buy an AOL "keyword"... and people would enter the keyword (shorter than a URL) and it would take you to a specific page.

Blimey, I'd forgotten about AOL keywords. Used to see those on adverts everywhere.

I speak to doctors and people of high calibre every day, asl some of them to type in a URL into the address bar and the first thing they do is punch the URL into a search engine or search bar thanks to the integrated bars in browsers now.

It's just simpler to say "Google it noob" than to give out specific details to the non technically minded person of which there are many....
