New features coming this year, including series link finally. :)

http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2010/08/20/playtv-is-set-to-get-even-better/

* Play TV is going to become an interactive experience with the great new ‘Chat TV’ feature. Text chat with friends and other PlayStation Network users while watching live TV, and without interrupting your viewing. This feature is a great way of interacting with friends while you watch TV, and especially great during the football as you can banter with your mates without taking your eyes off the action.

* The next new feature for PlayTV is a new premium programme guide (from ‘tvtv’) that lets you Plan your TV viewing 7 days in advance. You can also find tonnes of information on programmes and movies, as well as discovering new things to watch by searching TV listings by genre, actors, directors, producers and more. (standard PlayTV programme guide in Australia)

* You will also be glad to hear that PlayTV will be getting the much awaited feature in the UK, Series Link. Never miss an episode of your favourite series again. (Only available in the UK)

* Following on from the community theme of the new PlayTV features, you will be able to send recommendations for your favourite shows to your Facebook wall and also any of your PSN friends. People will be able to comment on your Facebook recommendations or even set a recording for the show directly from the PSN recommendation.

* The final new feature coming to PlayTV is designed to give you some added inspiration with ‘Community Favourites’. This feature lets you see what your friends and the PSN Community are watching and enjoying. So if you’re ever stuck for something to watch then just check out what everyone else is watching. (Not available in Australia)

Some good features, some meh features.

I'm guessing they're not going to do a Freeview HD tuner until after switchover is complete then in 2012.

Yeah new hardware will be needed for UK Freeview HD - will be day one purchase though - love PlayTV, though Series Link is way overdue...

Amazed Sony haven't made a DVB-T2 version of this yet, they're actually one of very few manufacturers making the tuners!
I thought most manufacturing was dedicated to STBs/in built into TVs currently - things like this and TV cards will take a while to emerge...

ps3ud0

Well Sony are one of the few people making T2 tuners currently, Vestel and LG I think are the others. Considering the PlayTV hardware already supports H264 it can't be a huge leap for them to chuck the T2 tuner in instead.

Well TBF just because the "make" a STB doesn't mean they manufacture the tuner in it. It'll be made by an OEM, and let's not forget the PlayTV is made by an OEM (re-branded Pinnacle USB Tuner device).

There are still rumblings of them releasing a new box (do a little search for PlayTV2), but I'd imagine the software is top priority really, since you won't get "Upgraders" to recommend a product if you don't satisfy them, and series link has been promised for ages.

Sony are one of few OEM's making T2 tuners :). I think the Samsung tv's used them, most non-brand tv's like Technika Alba etc. use Vestel made tuners and LG use their own.

About time on Series link, people have been asking for it since prior to the launch of PlayTV.
Have to say that I love mine. Just got my new 640GB internal HDD to upgrade the space inside my PS3 to get ready for when PlayTV2 is launched with HDTV capability.
Come on Sony, we want HDTV this year please....

if you turn it to standby it still records, if its turned of from the rocker switch then nothing happens, ive only just got my play tv, and its great tbh, the series link is the only bug bear for now.

The console will wake itself up from standby to record, then return to standby when it's finished.

Obviously, if you turn it off on the back or at the wall it wont record.

Thanks for the info.

Yeah I never turn it off at the back

Would love to replace my media center with playTV on the playstation, being a bit lazy as I've not checked on developement pretty much since it launched but the 2 features which were missing that are essential to me:

- Series linking, i.e. set it to record the complete series and then you don't have to worry about it?

- Dual recording, I understand playTV has 2 tuners and it allows you to watch one channel while recording another, however it able yet to record 2 channels at the same time?

Either of those possible?

Series link is coming in an update this year.

Dual recording is not possible.

Sorry for the delay. I bought a 640GB Samsung unit, which even has the title of being "PS3 compatible".
No problems so far. Nice to check and find that I now have 530GB of space available, though I'm guessing that HD recordings will take some big chunks out of that when PlayTV2 is launched.

Hd will take aroung 8gig for an hour i think, sd currently takes 2gig

il have a look into that Hdd as im getting close to being full now.

Not necessarily. HD SHOULD be broadcast in MPEG4, over MPEG2 that SD is broadcast in, and the whole point in needing DVB-T2 since they decided to not support it in the initial spec for Freeview. So it shouldn't take up quite so much space, more than SD probably but I doubt it'll be 8GB per hour.
