just a heads up (would have posted this in my other related thread but it was closed which is fair enough), but I just found that Google have released an App Store app which basically is spotlight for your iPhone...
it is an incredibly fast way of accessing your contacts as well as bookmarks and loads of other stuff, i know most peoples contact lists are slow to start up so this will help in the short term and may even be the weapon of choice in the long term even after the contact list thing is fully fixed
if this is old news then feel free to delete
EDIT: oh, it also supports all the other Google apps like Calendar, Mail, even Google Talk
