Is this possible to do? My monitors native resolution is 1680x1050 but I need to force the graphics card to output at the highest resolution it can, take a screenshot of the render output and then to go back to 1680x1050 again. I understand that while at a higher non-supported resolution the output won't appear correctly on my monitor may appear cropped. I know this seems like a weird and pointless thing to do but I want to try it and see if it works for what I need to do.

I've read that something can be done via the registry but it requires a system restart which isn't really practical and was wondering if there are any other better methods?

My graphicas card is the AMD Radeon 5870 running WIndows 7. I've already looked in the CCC too.

No, not without damaging the monitor. Even doing it for a second or two can damage the monitor so you cannot use it anymore.

EDIT: Fixed grammar issue.
