Its not the same thing! Arrange marriage is just away of getting you hitched quick lol, you have a selection women, say your grandmother may know a few that is good to be married, if choose one, the woman needs to agree to the marriage or the marriage is invalid and becomes forbidden.

It doesn't just happen in the middle east! It happens far east such as Japan for example. But nothing is stopping them finding their own bird.
 
From what I've seen, it's typically the mother who chooses a daughters potential suitor, and she tries to make the best possible decision. The daughter trusts the mum to make a wise (through age, wisdom gained from life etc) choice. But obviously in the vast majority of arranged marriges the girl can say no.

You highlight all the negatives, and the rare underage examples. (being rare + vile is exactly what makes them newsworthy)

But you dont give two hoots about any of the positives. Have you ever even wondered about them?

Surprisingly enough quite a few people who come from a culture where its common, and are in an arranged marriage, actually welcome it. An ex colleague of mine had an arranged marriage, has a kid and is very happy.

On the other hand there is obviously a grey area in some instances where an arranged marriage, while not forced, is coerced to an extent by cultural/family pressures.
