Hey guys wondering if you could point me in the right direction to where I am going wrong. Basically one of the higher up’s insists on using Windows Vista (SP1) – SP2 will not install. When I try to upgrade; it looks like it’s installing, the laptop restarts itself but it is still SP1. I have had a look for the upgrade log for the Service Pack and it doesn’t seem to exist. I do not get a prompt either stating if it is installed correctly or if it has failed upon restart.

Anyone had this problem before? Should point out as well this laptop is running with Norton 360 (Personal) but it is connected to the domain. I had numerous problems with 360, firewall, and the domain with AD. I resolved these problems and I am wondering if the Norton product could have anything to do to why it is not upgrading properly.

I have tried safe mode, the offline installer, looking in the event log. It looks as if the installer is not really working or installing properly. Could anyone think of a reason why it is failing?

Is there anyone who knows how to extract the SP2 package? There is a command line tool to extract (separately and install) but cannot remember it off hand. Even searched Google but cannot find the manual method of installing a service pack if Vista. The XP documentation is there but I don’t know if that will work in Vista or not.

Have you tried disabling your anti virus, and then install the service pack. Microsoft at one time did recommend disabling the anti virus before upgrading.

Yes the anti-virus is always disabled (especially in safe mode). I know Norton 360 AV is always active even if you disable it. It just disables the real-time scans on memory using the UI so thats why I've tried safe mode.
