As topic...I'd really like to get a 1440p monitor but suspect heavily i'd prefer the black borders but I'm on my 1080p monitor at the moment and I can't seem to find a way to to do it with the black borders? only fullscreen but obviously less sharpness. Is it still possible guys?!

What? I'm confused, are you trying to shrink your display so it's smaller than the full monitor screen? Eg Showing a 1080p desktop on a 1440p, but without it scaling up? If so it depends on the GPU you're using, there should be a scaling option in the software.

I don't understand, you want a 1440p monitor but don't want to make use of all the res and run it at 1080p with borders?

95% of the time i want it for 1440p use but i want the backup otpion of this for certain games that my pc cant run well enough in 1440p :D I'm figuring it is surely still possible !

Yes it's possible - just go into the nvidia control panel, adjust desktop size and position section. Change the 1080 (or whatever) setting to no scaling and anything using that res should have the black borders.

Thanks! Found this but when I hit apply..something seems to be overriding this and no black borders, weird :(

If using nvidia then nvidia control panel -> Adjust desktop size and position -> choose No scaling -> and from the drop down "Perform scaling on" select GPU -> tick of Override the scaling mode set by games and programs -> hit apply -> game and be happy

EDIT: didnt see your last post. But ill leave it incase someone else's search leads to this thread.

i7 + 970gtx but i really want very high frame rates etc! So i'd really like to drop to 1080p on certain things, hence working on this! as im guessing normal scaling will suck a bit!

Friend ran a ROG Swift with 1 970 no issues even on demanding games like TW3, he's on sli now though as he managed to get another 970 for dirt cheap.
