Hi all,

Can anyone spec me a ford code reader? I currently have an ST170 and would like the ability to check and clear codes.

I don't want anything to expensive, the cheaper the better really!!

I've had a search but can't really find anything!

Thanks for your help :thumb:

Where are you located? Don't know about cheap units but things like dreamscience and bluefin can all read the codes for you.

I'm in Cheshire.
I've read about dreamscience and bluefin's but didn't really want to spend that much. I think they might be my only option though!

Self Diagnostics Mode

The Self Diagnostics Mode gives you in-depth information about your engine and the actual numbers in digital. To use it, follow the steps:

* Insert Key but do not turn it on
* Press and hold the Trip Meter Reset Button
* While holding the reset button, start your car and continue holding the button
* Within 10 seconds, the display should change to "test" in LCD font and the needles will do a full sweeping. Release the Button

Pressing the button will now cycle through some 17 different modes

* 1.Shows a Gauge Sweep
* 2. Shows all 8's on the LCD (LCD TEST)
* 3. Illuminates all the bulbs on the dash
* 4. Displays hexadecimal value for ROM level
* 5. Displays the hexadecimal value for EE level
* 6. Shows DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code)
* 7. Digital Speedometer - mph
* 8. Digital Speedometer - kph
* 9. N/A
* 10. Digital tachometer
* 11.Fuel volume
* 12. Engine coolant temperature
* 13. Battery voltage
* 14. ABS fail
* 15. Electronic brake distribution (EBD) failure
* 16. Illumination
* 17. Crank Sense

All the codes are here: http://www.fordst170.co.uk/dtc-codes.php

Yeh I read in the reviews that the software can be a bit dodgy!

I'll try the software that comes with it first but i'll definately be buying your recommendation if it is as bad as people have said!

Where in cheshire are you?
I work at ford dealership and could have plugged in the correct diagnostic computer for you.
Unless you are just thinking ahead?

Damn! could have saved myself a bit of money there! Suppose it's useful to have for the future though!

I currently have ABS and traction control lights illuminated on the dash. Sometimes when first starting the car they will go off but come back on again as soon as I start moving! Do you have any ideas of what it could be?

Thing is with some of the cheap code readers they may not look at that side of things.
I have my own personal one for own use but it only looks at engine faults.

Im not too sure what the fault with yours could be, have you checked anything yourself or just starting to take a look?
Also did your code reader read anything?

Only ordered the code reader today so i'll see when it comes.

I've checked the fuse and will be checking and cleaning the sensors on Wednesday. Hopefully it will just be a bit of dirt on one of them!

What is the difference between the above and a scanguage 2 or a u480 can-bus ?

I understand you need a laptop for the above but is it in anyway better ?

Not sure about the differences.

I went for the laptop version so I can use different software...means i'm not stuck with something if it's not very good!

I'll let you know what it's like when it comes.
