Ford Diesel 2Ltr is hunting on startup ?

Just a quick question.
My Focus is now 14 yrs old with 80k miles - Just recently on startup it sound like it's running on two cylinders then cut's in to 4 - After 30 sec or so and a few pumps of throttle it's fine and never faulters at any time - Gave it a Italian tuneup Sunday and did around 40 miles and tried to keep rev's up around 3k - I am sure it regenerated as temp was up to half way -normally it sits just under half - Why Ford didn't put a light on dash I don't know.

Has anyone any ideas.
I will probably find out next tuesday as it's booked in for MOT.
 
Is there any blue-ish smoke from the exhaust on start whilst its running on a few cylinders which then stops once the car is firing on all 4? - My 2L TDCi had those symptoms and it was two of the injectors needed replacing which we found after a garage did a leak-down test to find which injectors were not working right.
 
Would a 14 year old car need to regen, pretty sure they didn’t have dpfs back then did they?

Certainly sounds like a fuelling issue but not sure an MOT would point out exactly what the issue is just that it passes or fails the emissions test

I think DPFs became a requirement around 2009-2010ish. I have a 2009 diesel which does not have one but the same model from 2010 does.

Injectors are more likely though.

I had this on my mondeo, I believe EGR valve is supposed to be the cause. I sold it before the repair was required
 
I gave it a Italian tune up last week -It's now intermittant so put some diesel additive in tank and later today off for a 60 mile thrash onto M54. Other than that it runs a treat and milage is 91k not 80k as in my original post.
Never touched EGR yet !

Ps. It regenerates but it doesn't have a Adblue tank.

My first thought was some of the injectors could be on the way out.
Potentially this.

Old diesel injectors start to drip into the cylinders when the car is sitting over night for example. When you start it next, the fuel sitting in the cylinders will make it hard to start and not run those cylinders until the cylinder has heated up enough and either ignites the unburnt fuel and the now extra fuel being chucked into it, or it gets pushed through the exhaust manifold down the exhaust.

Either way, if that's the case, you'll get some smoke coming out the exhaust for a bit until it clears up.
 
Started well this morning and has survived a 46mile thrash and it never missed a beat - Wish bodywork was as good. :D

I think I will give it 80-20 it will pass MOT on Tuesday :eek:
