I'm after a fiesta diesel at the moment and would like to know if anyone owns a ford fiesta 1.6 tdci zetec s and are they any good or can you recommend anything else that would be economical.

It's the same engine they put in the Focus. The engine isn't great, put your foot down and not much happens. Two questions:
1/ Why a diesel?
2/ If you need a diesel, why are you going for a small car?

I agree - the smaller petrol engines in the fiesta are very economical and with the extra purchase cost and the higher cost of fuel, I doubt a small diesel is the way to go.

Don't get me wrong, I think diesel's are great in bigger cars, my Mondeo is a 2.0 TDCI (also a Zetec-S FWIW) which is a stonking engine and makes a lot more sense in a car that size

+1

I have a 2.0 TDCI Focus Estate and it's nice enough, but if I was buying a smaller car I would likely go petrol. As the car is smaller the petrol engine will probably be quite economical anyway.

If it helps, i used to get 32ish mpg from my 1.25 fiesta.

From what I know the 1.6 diesel in the fiesta is quite punchy and very good.

Assuming you want the Zetec-S, the TDCI does 64mpg and the 1.6 Petrol does 42mpg.

A quick calculation in Excel shows, assuming 89p petrol and 99p diesel, plus a £1000 extra purchase cost, you need to do 50,000 miles before you break even. In a small car, this probably equates to 7 years or so.

Yep, depends on mileage and the deal you get.

Remember resale is generally easier and youll get a bit more with a small D

I'd get the petrol over the diesel, unless you are planning mega mileage which I doubt as a Fiesta is not a great car for doing motorway journeys in.

My other half has an 07 1.6 zetec-S TDCI and it does nowhere near 64mpg during normal/not slow driving. We're averaging 49.5mpg with the aircon on (over 2000 miles mixed driving) and it does 53.5mpg with the aircon off.

Overall it's a nice enough car, not the quickest in the world but not painfully slow.

I dont think anyone ever gets the official mpg figures, my mondy is meant to do about 50 and I've only ever seen that driving like a saint on a long journey. Tend to average about 40

The journey i'll be doing is stoke to west brom and its basically a second car for work only. We have an astra estate at the moment as the family car and i have a smart car which is my current work car which i really don't think is a motorway car.

Don't buy the Fiesta for doing motorway journeys, you will hate it. Anything more than an hours worth of driving in mine leaves me with a stiff back and a headache.

Bear in mind stoke to west brom (assuming rush hour travel) will be slow motorway speeds and stop/start motoring. Something with a comfy seat, good stereo and light controls sounds best to me.

Adjust the seat properly and buy some better music. While a fiesta wouldn't be my first choice for regular motorway driving short jouneys shouldn't be causing you such discomfort, hell even my P reg corsa didn't cause me to be in pain just because I drove it for a few hours.

What are you looking at spending? I'd be more inclined towards a Focus TDCI or MK4 Golf TDI PD for newer-fiesta sort of money
