Ford Fiesta PATS Problem

Hey,

First visit to the Motors area...with my first major problem!

5 months ago bought a '96 Ford Fiesta Classic from a dealer, fully MOTed when I brought it and had it checked out by a trained mechanic friend of mine who said it was all in good nick. All well and good no problems until last week ago when the car didn't start at all. Nothing from the dash status light at all, internal electrics still have power but the engine doesn't fire.

I've had a look at the car and had my mate have a look and we have narrowed it down to a burnt smelling PATS unit. The unit itself is completely fried so one way or another I need to replace or bypass the unit. I can dismantle the dash and get at the unit and the ECU should hopefully be OK. My current plan is to try and get a scrapper of the same model, rip out the PATS, swap it out and hope that the scrapper has the master key to reprogram it...

Ideally I don't want to lose the money that I spent on this car, and if I have to get a unit reprogrammed by Ford I suspect I will be looking at the £700 mark. If I cannot get it working again I'm looking at chucking out an otherwise perfect car.

Would really appreciate anyones experience / advice on this issue and if the current plan is at all feasible...and if not, another plan?!

Thanks in advance!

Passive Anti Theft System, basically the immobiliser system on the car. It sends a coded response to the engine command unit and lets the car turn over. It'll only give the correct signal if the PATS system recognises the chip in the key...which makes my life that little bit easier :o

/edit - beaten :o

Pretty Standard CODE 1 system.

And if it's anything like other CODE 1 systems, the PATS from another car won't work with your ECU, you'd need the complete set from the donor car.

I was thinking that was possibly the case, I think the ECUs are fairly standard in the '96-98 Fiestas (FLUX 95FB-xxxxx-xxxxxxx) so if I got the ECU and PATS system AND wiring bundle from ECU > PATS...should that be OK?

Cheers!
