Im thinking of replacing my 2010 diesel civic due to some minor issues. Got about 6k to play with plus the value of the civic which im guessing will be around 2k so total around 8k.

Most sensible is to get the civic fix (ac broken and wheel bearings needs replacing and possibly the steering rack) and move on but the focus link below makes me want to try a petrol turbo plus its a change of car.

What are ecoboost engines like? I read online that there are recalls regarding water pump. Should I consider a focus that has not been recalled yet?

Thanks

The 1.6 is a good one. The mk7 Fiesta ST uses it and it's been pretty solid. Just make sure the recall is done (or get it done asap).

It's the 1.0 and the 2.3 have been having issues.

Would a ford dealer make a fuss over a recall that the car was bought from an independent dealer? Not really done a recall before

I've got a 2012 Ford Focus 1.6 Ecoboost, I think it's a really nice car, I ended up getting the Zetec S with 180bhp. Not got all the extra toys but I think it looks nicer. It's decent on fuel, better if not on par with my previous car which was a 2001 1.6L Astra. And for the first car I've owned with more than 100bhp it's quite quick too, I suspect the 150bhp will be mostly similar with a little bit less top end.

There was a recent recall for the coolant system, as there was previously no "Coolant Low" warning. But was easy enough to get done, Ford had the car for the day, they replaced the whole coolant system and updated the software.

Had it almost a year so far and I'm really pleased with it.

I have a Zetec S 182. They have a decent turn of speed for overtaking and also give decent MPG. I like mine and likely won't be looking to change in the near future. On a long run I've had nearly 45mpg but average tends to be around 37 with most short journeys, a longer run twice a week and not much city driving.

Nice to see good things about the engine.
Ill ask the seller for test drive and check for recall and see how it goes.

Anything else to look out for?

I think it being a titanium x makes my civic es lacking in terms of gadgets.

I work at a Ford dealer, the 1.6 Ecoboost is a good engine, we have very few problems with them. If you want you can trust me the reg and I'll have a look and see if the recall has been done, or any other warranty work.

What is the clutch like in these focus?
I had been stung before with the civic and had to replace the clutch after 6 months of buying it as apparently they are not very durable.

My brother had an 11 plate Titanium with the 150ps variant. It seemed good enough for power, economy and nothing went wrong in the 4 years he had it.

I've had an Ecoboost (150) for exactly two years to the day - Have put 35.000 miles on it (currently at 65.000) with no issues.

Being direct injection, the engine isn't the most refined (don't be alarmed with a slight diesely-like tapping for the first minute after a cold start) but the power delivery is really good with loads of torque from 1400-1500rpm, feels like a much more powerful engine than it is.

Fuel economy I have averaged 38mpg (real) over my ownership which doesn't include much traffic and is mainly motorway, I drive sensibly with the occasional foot down.
That said, I've managed 55mpg over a 70 mile trip on cruise control at 60mph up the M11.

Regarding the recall, don't worry about it - your local dealer will be able to do it for you regardless of where you bought it. Mine is booked in for next week.

Thanks. I will be coming from a diesel civic so noisy engine do not bother me that much.

I can live with 40ish mpg sounds ok to me as I currently get around the same with the current car.

Are there any ford focus forums in the uk similar civinfo? I find trawling forums owners benificial in getting to know the car.

so what kind of warranty/checkout should you get/make for the turbo (@Scania had said he had been warned away from 1.5 ecoboost reliability),
... but there are few naturally aspirated makers left - mazda

Eh? Why would you need a warranty/check just for the turbo (or why would you consider a non-turbo car for the same reason?)

I look upon them as something that can be particularly abused, at startup/cool down, or just poor (non synth) oil,
so - are they considered as more than a consumable with limited warranty cover. ?
I guess like for engines you could get an oil analysis - but that's probably too anal.

As such, at this age, I would consider naturally aspirated, they might consume a bit more, but that will offset the potential repair bill
