Hello,

I am currently on my second car. First was a Metro :p , then went for a 2000 Fiat Punto Sporting.

I have been driving 2 years now and have 2 years no claims discount.

Looking for my 3rd car now and have always liked the Focus.

From looking around Auto Trader, i have come across the Ford Focus 1.8 TDCi Sport 3d :)

Just looking for peoples views on them, running costs etc

Can anyway tell me whats the earliest reg they come on ? the older it is the cheaper which is good for me.

Thanks Ben

The 1.8 TDCi Sport looks good and there aren't a great many of them around. However you will pay a big premium for the TDCi engine and if you're not doing many miles it won't be worth it. The early TDCi's can have problems with fuel pumps and injectors which are very expensive to fix, where the Zetec petrols are pretty much bulletproof if you service them, they do have the odd problem with coil packs and HT leads but these are cheap parts that you can fit yourself.

The Focus is generally cheap to run, but all models seem to be a bit heavy on fuel. I had a 1.8 and it generally did 28mpg over a tank, I once managed to get 31mpg out of it when I lent it to my Mum for a week. They handle very well, but the ride is firm and they are not good on rough country roads. I found it pretty uncomfortable and the interior was no better than OK, but it really depends what you're used to. I had stepped down from bigger cars to the Focus and the difference in comfort and refinement was very noticeable, so much so I got fed up with driving it after 6000 miles and bought a Mondeo. People who step up to the Focus tend to think they're great though.
