Ford Focus Facelift

Hey all

been keeping an eye out for a Focus for the past 6 months, but im not 100 % clued up on the trim levels and from reading various websites I am not sure I understand.

The ones I am looking at are Sport, Zetec and Ghia models (Titanium etc are too expensive)

and from what I can gather, the Zetec model has uprated suspension and the others don't ?

and I don't know how accurate Parkers are, but they don't mention anything about the suspension

oh and possibly not looking for a sport model as I think (I may be wrong) all have black plastic handles, mirrors spoiler etc)

The sport is actually one of the base models at this time, on the facelifts it was actually a better spec and came with nav etc but on the early ones you get pretty much no kit with it. Definitely go for the Zetec or Ghia, I'm pretty sure that the suspension is all the same by the way.

Im pretty sure Sport was LX with Alloys and a few other bits to make it look better.

I think Studio level was base at that time too

The Ghia has cruise control I think but also comes with that horrific wooden effect trim.
I'd prob go for the Zetec.
The thing I never got to the bottom of when I was looking though was whether to go for the 100ps or the 115 versions as there seem to be conflicting views about the reliability and efficiency of either.

Ghia has full electrics (Zetec is front only) and cruise control (mostly). Wood trim is silly but if it really bothered you that much its easily swapped with the silver trim from a Zetec or such.
Believe the climate pack for the Zetec is the heated windscreen and heated mirrors, air con should be standard but I've never actually seen a non climate pack Zetec in the metal :)

When I was researching my car (I got a Ghia 1.6 100bhp) most opinions of the 1.6 115bhp were it was a lot less economical for barely any noticable performance increase and its a bit more of a complex engine (the 100bhp engine is basically ancient tried and tested tech now). Don't think I ever actually saw more than a couple of 1.8 petrols in my searching, they seem fairly rare.

My ex had a 1.8 Petrol Sport and it seemed to drink fuel but she drove quite erratically and not smooth so not particularly surprising.

I had a 2006 Zetec Climate, it was a nice middle ground. Mine was an ex demonstrator so titanium was way too much at the time. Only thing i found mine lacking was cruise control.

The heated windscreen was ace and as said you needed the Climate to get aircon on the Zetec, see if you can find one with the sony MP3 headunit as i thought it was ace in mine.

My brother has a 59 plate Titanium and I was surprised that it doesn't have cruise control. Even my mid range 56 golf has it.
Don't really like the alloys on the titanium either but that's just personal opinion I guess :p

Oh yes, not sure what your budget is but if its ~£5k you should find 08+ which will be mk2.5 and has a nicer front end, aux ports and a better interior. The 115ps would only be on the zetec-s version of the mk2.5 but it does look much sportier.

Which model golf? I've had a Gt tdi and a sport on similar year, both didn't have cruise it was an optional extra, i'm sure I had a gti with no cruise either..

Mk5 SE so pretty much the mid range. Surprised the GT didn't have it as it must surely be a generally higher spec. Was yours deffo a Mk5?

I've got 2005 2.0 Ghia.

Ghia is the better spec. It comes with:

Auto lights and wipers
Cruise control
Heated front and rear screens
Front fogs
A/C
Lumbar alteration
Centre arm rest and storage
17" alloys

Its the spec to get out of the ones listed. The wood trim is a purely the Radio surround and very easy and cheap to change.

Engine wise get the 1.6 or the 2.0.

The 2.0 is noticeably more powerful than the 1.8 and gets very similar mpg. I'm getting 40mpg+ over the 30000 miles I've ran it.

The 1.6 isn't great to be fair - I used to get them as Hire cars all the time and tbh whilst I found it offered acceptable performance when ragged, it always seemed terrible on fuel (for its power and capacity) regardless of how it was driven which seems to be backed up by various long term owners.

I've always found both the 1.8 and 2 litre to offer adequate performance and be acceptable on fuel (for the relatively short period of times i've had them)

thanks rodenal, but is that the 100ps versions?

I will be doing short journeys (my work journey is short) and im going to start doing some Clycling club stuff, like Time Trials and Hill races which are all in the next villages, so it wont really be driven for long periods of time, but the odd occasion I will use it for to get to town (20-25 mins away) or a weekend trip away)
