Hi guys,

I'm in the process of getting myself a nice new car, as I'm finally resigned to the fact my old shed is past its use by date. Obviously I've been doing my research but I've come across something to which I can't find an answer.

Did Ford produce the 2008 facelift Focus with the 1.8 TDCi engine? I know they don't offer the 1.8 TCDi anymore, but I've seen some 08 plate model with the 1.8. Basically I just want to confirm one way or the other, if anyone knows the answer It'd be great as google has so far failed me.

I have no idea in answer to your question but something you should consider is late registrations.

A car could be built in say March 2006 and for some silly reason never sold/registered till October 2006 meaning although it in put on a 56 plate, the engine and trim may be from a prefacelift or old spec as it was build a lot earlier in the year.

This is why you may well find cars with certain engines that stopped production a few months before still in a new car etc...

Indeed, I am aware of late registrations, in fact it's what lead me to the query. But thanks anyway.

I wouldnt bother with the 1.8 personally, you get all the negatives of a 2.0 (higher fuel consumption) but none of the benefits (lower torque/power).

If your going for a focus, either go for the economical 1.6 or if you want a bit of grunt get a 2.0.

I was just greedy and went for the 2.5 turbo :P

Isn't that true for the petrol engines, he was asking about the diesels?

I'm leaning toward the 1.8 TDCi as there are more about in my price range (~£9k), my local dealer as a couple of 08 reg 1.8 TDCi Zetecs on the forecort according to their website so I might pop and take a look tomorrow. There seem to be very few facelift 2.0 TDCi models around from what I've seen so far. Besides, the Mk1 1.8 TDCi was a great car imo, can't see the new model being anything but better. And anything is better than my T reg 1.6 petrol.

The Focus is certainly one of the (if not the) best car in it's class but instead of going from a Focus to another Focus might it be worth test driving a few other cars just to make sure you are making the right choice.

Plenty of metal out there for £9k, and although I'd say go for a Focus if you want one and they are a good car it's a shame to not look around when spending nearly £10k.

Yeah, I've had a look around and to be honest apart from the Audi A3 which is out of my price range unless I go for something with high mileage, there is nothing that appeals. Most other models in the small family class are a bit boring in my eyes. Besides, my current Focus has been a pleasure to drive for most of the past 8 years and I have to say I do like the post facelift Mk2s, can't believe the standard spec list really. But then a lot has happened in the last 11 years, mine doens't even have air con.

Excellent, thanks. I did think so but just wanted to check. Don't suppose you happen to know when they discontinued it do you?

The 1.6TDCi, when stage 5 was released (109PS vs 90PS... I think?), was a lot better than previously, making the 1.8TDCi Stage 4 a little redundant. On top of this, production for the current Focus ends this October so variants are winding down to the most popular ones.
