I have a 51 plate mk2 focus 1.6 zetec. When I turn on my side/main lights, my middle/upper brake light comes on constantly  When The front lights are not on, the brake light only comes on when I brake.
Any ideas

Had any work done on the lights recently? Sounds like the brake light has been wired into the rear lights. If not, a short in the wiring circuit perhaps?

Are any warning lights coming on on the dash? Is it a high mileage car? Could be a fault with the body computer as the symptoms sound too quirky to be a simple wiring failure or light connector failure.

If you have AA or RAC membership, call them out and they'll check the current going into the connection to the upper brake light. Tell them that although your car hasn't broken down, the brake lights aren't working properly which is making illegal to drive.

Thanks, I had replaced the sidelight/brake bulb, one of the dual bulbs with a halfords own branded one. I have now replaced that with a bosch one and all is fine now.

Many Thanks :)
