Hi there.

When I begin to hit over 40mph mostly around 50-60mph I hear a humming sound that seems to be coming from behind me. Any ideas what this might be? Tyre noise maybe or the bearings? If it is bearings would the noise be constant at any speed?

Thanks

Michael

Probably bearings, it tends not to be noticeable below 45mph initially (it gets progressively worse). If your mileage is 60k plus then I'll put money on it. Not too bad a fix to be honest, shouldn't cost more than £100 to sort (if it's drums on the rear, discs make it a bit pricier).

Thanks for the reply. I just had an MOT Tuesday and there were no problems. Would this be something he would look for when testing the car? Is it something that you can detect without driving the car?

Thanks

Michael

Rear bearings are a common problem on the Focus. The MOT test should check for any play in the bearings but they only spin the wheel by hand so a noisy bearing would not necessarily show up. The Focus doesn't have much in the way of sound insulation around the back so anything noisy is quite noticeable.

Yep sounds like a bearing, ours was noisy for about a year before we replaced it, we had it done at Ford and was charged:

£58.50 Labour
£40.81 Wheel Bearing Kit
£16.67 Vat

£111.90

Ours has rear discs so was more expensive than with rear drums

Thanks for the replies.

I'm know nothing about cars by the way. But on the back there are what looks like drums and the front there are big silver discs. So I presume I have drums on the back which is cheaper to fix? It is 1999 Focus 1.8 Zetec

Thanks

Michael

Actually I saw that last night while on eBay looking at wheel bearing kits. It has sold but there are others. Are they ok to use and not some cheap quality rubbish? There are a few for £10-£12.

Thanks

Michael
