Hai guys,

The lock button on the key fob has warn out...means unlocking is fine but have to lock it manually...fail.

I've heard through the grapevine if I just buy another key like so http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FORD-MONDEO-F...CarParts_SM&hash=item483e5aea31#ht_500wt_1156 I can just take the chip from one key and put it in the new one and it'll be fine.

Can anyone with better knowledge advise? Otherwise, how much should I expect to pay to get a fob programmed to the car?

And nope, don't have the red one :)

Ta!
Jake

If you buy that key, it separates into two halfs.

The immobiliser chip is in the key half so its just a case of programming the new remote half (is easily done by yourself, I can find the instructions if needed).

If you can mate that'd be handy :) - Cheers!

I'm not sure about transferring chips, though it sounds like in principle it should work.

What year is the Mondeo? Newer versions of Ford keys don't need a red key, and you can code a new fob from a working key. As I recall, if you have two keys that will turn over the engine, then you can code another fob.

We bought a 56 Focus and it came with one buttonless key. We got the blades cut and got the key shop to code the buttons for one of the fobs, then I programmed the other one.

I don't remember the specific details on how I did it, but I can find the link if you want it. I do remember that the man in the key shop gave up trying to code the second one as he couldn't do it, and my wife got really cross with me for saying it could be done, then I did the second key at home in 2 minutes.

Just remember you need to re-program all remotes when doing this, not just the new one.

Indeed, as mentioned above I think this is what the key man was doing wrong when he tried to do ours, as my wife told me that each time he tried to code the second key, the first one then stopped working.

Yeah...I think I'll order 2 as it'll be stupid not to have a working spare and at £15 a pop its hardly going to break the bank.

Thanks for the advise :)

Both the PATS transponder and the remote locking are within the remote fob, the key blade is just that, just cut metal.
You need at least 2 working keys in order to program another one into the PATS, but the remote can be programmed without any other key.

That sounds more like what I was trying to say!

I'm confused (not difficult I know)

I only have the 1 fob/key (identical to the one linked). Can I program one I buy off the bay of e or not? :p

Are you sure about this? I cannot see the transponder in mine, but the newer keys certainly have the transponder in the key blade half.

If this is the case, you'd either need to swap over the transponder or take it to Ford to be programmed if you only have one key.

Edit: Clarkey is indeed correct - the transponder is located in the small notch at the bottom of the remote fob.

My fob stopped working so I got hold of a second hand replacement on eBay. It turned up today (coincidental timing for this thread). I swapped out the fob and put the old key blade on the new fob. Programmed it fine, and it unlocks all doors as it should. Then I went to start the engine and...nothing.

Bugger. turns out the PATS transponder is located within the actuall remote fob section, NOT the blade. So, this has to be programmed to work with the immobiliser, for which you need two keys; luckily, I have the spare key at my parents, so I will try it once I get hold of that, the instructions on how to do so are in the owners manual. Without two keys, you will have to go to a Ford dealership apparently.

HOWEVER...

According to my research today, you can try swapping the transponder out of the old fob, into your newly programmed one. Either you can ease it out the fob very carefully (It's the tiny glass dome protruding from the fob) and plac it in your replacement. Or, as I think someone mentioned, you can use the top of a new fob with the bottom battery section of the old fob. This way you get the new remote electronics gubbins for working the central locking attached to your old battery cover containing the PATS chip allowing you to start the car.

I would have done this myself, however, on my fob, it was the connections in the battery section which needed replacing :/

Good luck! Been reading up on this all day, as at the moment I have a new fob hanging off my keyring to unlock the car, with the old keyfob+blade also attached so i can start it once I get in :( Ill try and post some of the more useful links I came across if I get a chance.

Separated the 2 halves of my ford key for the first time in 7 years after reading this thread, having to stand ever closer to the vehicle to get locking to operate & was looking at how to go about fitting a new battery into the fob. The cavity inside was rammed with pocket fluff! Cleaned it all out & the key works much better :)

Got the spare key today and tried the method for programming in the manual for adding a new key so it can start the car. Surprise surprise, it didn't work.

Why is nothing ever simple? :/

EDIT: Turns out I was able to pull the olds PATS chip out of the old fob and slide it into the new one; its a bit like an elongated paracetamol capsule and was just sitting in the rubber housing, not actually plugged into anything. Works fine now :D
