I have been looking for MK3 mondeos for a while now and came across the above beast and am looking for opinions.

I was originally considering the 2.0 Ghia X but these seem to be quite rare and command a much higher price. However, I have seen a 2.5 V6 with 87k on the clock in good condition (I haven't actually seen it yet and am relying on the advert) for £1650.

Is this the same engine as in the Mk2 ST24? Is there anything I need to be aware of? Obviously it will be considerably more thirsty but i'm happy to pay more on fuel as the car will work out cheaper than an equiavelent 2.0. If there are any nasty surprises this may not be the case, however :p

I dont know too much about them other than I also think a MK3 2.5 might be something I'd be interested in upgrading to, so Im gonna camp in this thread for opinions. For £1650 though, assuming good condition, if you don't buy it, I will :D

I've heard the running costs are very very similar to the ST220 so you may aswell go for one of those.

Infact, don't. There are too many people on here now with ST220s :p

Thanks but I don't want an ST220 :) I want a cheap runabout for < £2k to save money for a house deposit. The ST220 doesn't fit this criteria.

ye sod off will ya! :D

Good reliable cars, engine will go for miles and the kit level is very good. Will return 35mpg or so on a run maybe more depending on how you drive and will probably only cost you servicing mot and maybe some replacement rear subframe bushes.

I'm horrified at the price of these now - I bought my 2.0 Ghia X for over twice that a year ago. Right before it became clear (to me) that the credit crunch was going to kill used car prices.

Likewise, I paid 7k for a low mileage mint Zetec-S TDCI facelift last year, now worth 4 at tops probably :(

I would still expect anything for 2k to be a bit ropey at best

The 2.5 v6 doesn't really fit that criteria either, it's not great on economy. What about a 2.0 petrol?

I asked pretty much the same question a few months ago.

the general concensus was that it was the performance, look, and feel of a 2.0l petrol, with the running costs of an ST220. So if you want a fast Mondeo, get the ST220, if you want a cheap Mondeo, get a 2.0l petrol. The 2.5 V6 is the worst of both worlds.

The 2.5 V6 Ghias are also not really any cheaper to buy than the ST220's, yet a lot more than the 2.0l

I'd put my money on the diesel personally. Thats backed up by the fact I did. Its not the most frugal (45 average, 55 on a run) but the torque is really nice and its not laggy. Dont know if its any quicker than the 2.0 in 0-60 terms but its a damn sight more satisfying to drive. Dont know if you'll find one for that money though, I dont know what the older/cheaper TDDIs are like

the 2.5 is considerably quicker then the 2.0:)

I drove a 2.0l mk2 and it felt considerably slower than my current mk2 ST24, picked mine up for £1200 with 74k on the clock. Nice car to drive, feels very refined and cruises well on the motorway with plently of mid range power. I get around 350-400 miles to the tank depending how i drive it. Cost about £50 to fill.
