Ford Puma Engine Noise Help

Hi all,

I've just bought an 01 Ford Puma, 60,000 miles, 12 months tax + MOT all the trimmings for £2250 from a trader.

In with the agreed price was also a full service and cambelt change, bargain! When I test drove the car (before this work was done), the engine sounded great and the power delivery was smooth and progressive.

Having picked it up yesterday it feels quite different:

When driving along, as soon as it reaches above 3000rpm there is a metallic vibration sound coming from the front left of the car, power seems to be less willing too. This is only noticeable when driving in gear, revving the engine in neutral doesn't create this noise. A point to note is the exhaust which is in poor condition, however this runs along the right side of the car and this is definitely coming from the left.

Ideas so far are, air filter? ECU? Exhaust? Has anybody got any ideas at all?

Debating whether to take it back to the guy or not.

Thanks for any help, much appreciated.

Take it back & get him to sort it out - You have rights, traders know this which is why they charge a premium.

Time to get your moneys worth from him.

When you say left and right side, can you clarify? Near side/off side, drivers/passengers side?

As others have said just take it back.

I used to have a 1.7 VCT puma and had a similar issue, caused by the aux belt failing, it sounded like a bag of spanners scratching a cliff face when it got traded in for my s2000.

Hope you get it sorted, great cars and mine was where I really learned how to drive, plenty of little mods that can be done that sharpen things further.

In reply to Tesla, the noise is heard on the passenger (left) side from the engine bay.

A little update: I've had a family friend mechanic look at the car this morning to try and diagnose the problem, he believes it to be the variable cam timing being screwed up somehow, which is logical to think as they've changed the cambelt - as I've read elsewhere on the internet, if it's not done properly then problems can occur.

When looking at the car he also pointed out that while the car was not misfiring, it was 'missing' a beat, and as said before some power is lost. He also noticed there either is or has been an oil leak at some stage.

After this I took it back to the trader/garage combo in question, took the mechanic for a drive in it (who spoke very poor english!). At first he tried to fob me off with it being the exhaust, but I was having none of it. I told them about the cam timings and they eventually agreed this could be the problem or an issue with the inlet manifold, I also told them about the possible oil leak which they need to sort out too. Just waiting for them to phone now.
