Ford stereo question

My 6000 stereo for my focus packed up a while back and I have recently bought what I thought was an exact replacement. However the plug for the volume control on the steering wheel does not fit into the stereo. Think it turns out the stereo is from a mondeo / transit which has a different sized plug. So.....can I buy an adapter type thing to allow me to connect my focus plug-thing into the mondeo / transit socket?

Much easier to get the correct unit than trying to botch the wrong one. I doubt you'll find a suitable adapter easily.
