Hi,

A pheasant took out the driver side wing mirror on my 2010 Ford Fiesta Zetec and I need a full new unit fitting. Knowing virtually 0 about cars - is this a sensible thing to try and DIY or should I take it in?

I think this is the correct part, manual fold with indicator? https://www.wingmirrorman.co.uk/win...-mirror-electric-heated-matt-black-right-side it's matt rather than painted but if I go for a primed one I have no idea how I'll get it painted to match the blue/cyan body? :(

This is what it looks like:

Inside door fitting hole?
Good side
Broken side

In terms of fitting it, on the inside of the door behind the mirror, I can locate one nut/bolt shown above - is it a good assumption I can just undo this and fit the new one? Or is there likely to be more complex door disassembly required for the electrics?

Also - I do need to make a 2 hour drive home after Christmas before I can fix this. Is that legal with a broken driver side mirror?

Thanks very much for any help!

I would pick up a used genuine mirror from ebay, rather than a replacement part, can probably find one in the rightish colour too eg ,
third party (far east) will ivariably have inferior mechanics, fit and glass , especially if wide-angle glass.
even call your local breakers and do a deal.

Thanks, that item looks exactly correct :) It looks like you have to take the door apart to connect the electrics but hopefully that won't be too hard...

Am i likely to be ok taking it on the road in the mean time?

They aren't a particularly difficult mirror to fit, but there are a couple of things to note. (I've probably removed/refitted 50+)

That 13mm nut is the only real fixing holding it on. There are a couple of locating pegs that help you line it up properly, but you will need to remove the inner door trim to disconnect the electrics.

Do yourself a favour and remove the door speaker! It makes the job of routing the wire a whole lot easier as you can get you hand/arm in up through the speaker hole. Make an accurate mental note of the way the wiring runs before you disconnect it. It is extremely easy to run it the wrong way when refitting, I've seen it done incorrectly several times and it can foul in the window channel, stopping it from opening fully. Just put it back the same way it came out and you'll be fine.

Keep an eye on ebay etc for a second hand one and fit it yourself. Very easy to fit, only a wire with a connector on the end for the electric mirror and a few screws holding it on.

You must be getting confused with another model, as there aren't "a few screws". As I have said above, only a single nut holds the mirror to the door.

Few screws or 1 bolt, doesn't really matter as the wing mirror is really easy to replace.
If accuracy doesn't matter to you, then fair enough.

We'll have to be thankful that it's something as simple as a door mirror, and not a major structural component where incorrect advice could cause a serious problem.

If it was something as major as that then you would leave that to the professionals, and not some people who have done it a "few times".

Thanks for all the advice. I'll have a crack at it - there's a good chance it will turn into a £400 garage replacement job when I brake the door and speakers :D

Haha, best of luck. Take it steady and feel free to ask if you get stuck with anything.

Agreed, which is why I'll continue to give my professional advice freely where I can, and correct those that give out wrong advice :)

Thanks again for all the help above! Managed to successfully DIY it today, the 'use a piece of string' advice was invaluable! However, the ebay mirror is unfortunately the wrong shade of blue... :D

In my ignorance, can any garage repaint it for me to match? Or do I want a special body-shop repair type place? And I'm guessing that will be £30-40?

Thanks!

Shame about the colour difference. Vision blue mirror and your car looks like Tonic or Avalon (hard to tell from that angle).

Anywhere that sprays should be able to do it for you. At least you can just pop the coloured cap off rather than having to remove the whole thing.
