Forensic computing jobs

the forensic science service, whose hq is on birmingham business park, get involved in computer forensics for the police, other government organisations and also the private sector. they also have labs dotted around the country - including two in london. check them out.

One in London. Which isn't recruiting. The FSS currently has a recruiting freeze.

Some forces do have their own labs for this work, but the only one I know for certain is the West Yorkshire one. There are a few private companies in this work, who pay (I imagine) rather better than the FSS does. And the FSS pays better than the police. This is NOT a job to go after if you plan to get rich.

Used to chat to some guys who worked in forensic computing when i was at Sussex Police. Most of them had to go through pr0n all day every day, some got really strange and had to be rotated around different types of work to keep them off anti-depressants!

Didn't look like something i'd want to do anyhow...but whatever floats ye' boat

Forensic computing is a hard job to get into. There are not many positions available and recruiting isnt done very often, and with all the CSI wannabes and the new learn from home forensice science degrees you can get, there is a lot of competition to get one of the jobs.

Thanks for the info, according to that site the local vacancies will be (if any) in tomorrows evening standard. I'll have to pick one up :)

Most forces do their own forensic computing work - outsourcing is expensive and to be avoided if possible. It is fairly difficult to get into but not impossible, especially if you're willing to move. I got lucky in that the force I work for decided to civilianise late, and recruited internally - I was already working for the force in a completely unrelated area but applied and got in.
I quite like the job - personally I don't find it particularly disturbing and it's always interesting and worthwhile work. The pay is okay but much better in the private sector.

Nowadays it's mostly watching CCTV images for hours at a time, but yes you get paedophile films (real), snuff movies (fake) etc as well.
