ATI’s R600 Fails High-End Test
We all had many expectations and hopes toward ATI’s R600, and it was very difficult to believe to DailyTech’s benchmark. According to Fudzilla, it seems that ATI has confirmed that the R600 won’t be able to compete with Nvidia’s GeForce 8800 GTX, and surely won’t be able to bother Nvidia’s upcoming GeForce 8800 Ultra as well. The Radeon HD 2900 XT would be a cheaper alternative for Nvidia’s GeForce 8800 GTS - nothing more. According to Overclockers.com, the press is surely unhappy about AMD: “You fly over 150 people to Northern Africa just to tell them that your new video cards are going to suck?”.
We can easily understand the frustration and disappointment from ATI’s R600. I’m quite sure that the press is really unhappy about flying to Tunisia just to hear it, and to see DailyTech gets all the exclusives, due to the cursed NDA. Well, It seems that you don’t have to wait for the final reviews anymore, and don’t expect to any miracles. We can now admit that ATI’s R600 is a failure due to the long delays and unable to compete with Nvidia’s high-end offerings. On the other hand, R600 will offer better alternatives to 8800 GTS and the 8600 series. Congratulations Nvidia.

ATI Radeon HD 2900 XTX Benchmarked @ DailyTech
ATI Radeon HD 2900 XTX video cards feature 1GB of GDDR4 video memory, besting the GeForce 8800 GTX’s 768MB of GDDR3 video memory. GPU manufacturers often wait to set the exact clock frequencies of bins until just weeks before launch. Our Radeon HD 2900 XTX sample was released to board partners in the second week of April, features memory clocked at 2.02 GHz and a core clock of 750 MHz.
Physically, the Radeon HD 2900 XTX core is identical to the Radeon HD 2900 XT core. Both feature 320 stream processors, but the XTX differs by bringing GDDR4 to the package. Despite the reference clock speed differences, DailyTech managed to push the ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT up to 845 MHz core and 1.99 GHz memory. Unlike the ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT benchmarked yesterday, the HD 2900 XTX is a 12-inch card geared specifically towards OEMs and system integrators.
