Soooo turns out u forgot to tax my car on Feb 1st. I never realised the v5c was at an old address the car was brand new and I had already moved when I collected it but it took 5 months to buy as waiting on build so in that time addresses changed by dealer didn't update and i didn't notice the address when picked it up in Jan 2016 and seemingly forgot. Roll on this year all post is going to old address I don't get reminder and forget to tax it, again no excuse it's my responsibility. I just moved into my own property now which made me realise the issue on the v5c as sent to update it which made me think of tax. I went online last night to pay tax and will ring them Monday morning as I'll need to backdate the 2 months and probably pay a fine.

Anyone done a similar stupid thing, anything else should be aware of or do?

Signed, an idiot

Don't drive it and if possible take it off the public road on to your drive if you have one. You don't want the police seeing it and seizing it for no tax. Can you not pay it today online because the v5c is incorrect?

Also remember you need to change your licence address when you move!

Oddly the license was correct and I can't do my new address on it yet as dvla don't recognise the post code!!

Well it let me tax it online so I'm not sure, car is in my parking bay in a courtyard on a new estate without a road sign yet so should be ok. Issue is getting to work haha.

Why would you call them to back date it and ask to pay a fine? I'm all for being honest, but i absolutely would not be chasing them to let them know they should fine you. In the same way I wouldn't call up my local police force and let them know I did 35mph through a 30mph zone and want to pay my fine.

If they want to fine you then let them send a fine through the post and if they don't, great, you fought the law and the law lost.

But I broke the law, it could come bite me in the arse in future for all I know. And as post is going to an old address they might be trying to fine me I don't know.

I messed up I'll ring them and make sure everything is right on my record. Peace of mind and all that

Whilst you're at it, be sure to call the DVLA and inform them that you have failed to update the registered keeper address of your vehicle. I think that one is up to a £1000 fine.

I just think you're being a little hard on yourself? You forgot to tax your car for 2 months, you haven't murdered someone. If they want to fine you, they'll find a way of doing it and the a outcome will be no better than you calling them. You've still committed an offence and they'll still follow the standard way of dealing with you. And you also get different level of fines depending on whether you have been driving the car or its been parked up and you've forgotten to SORN it or re tax it.

Can go to your old address and collect your old mail?

Agree with the above tbh.

I'd let them do the chasing for your mistake if they notice it. I've had a couple friends forget to tax / mot theirs for almost 2 months too and nothing has ever come of it.

Surely if you haven't been caught by an ANPR camera you should be ok. I once forgot to SORN a motorcycle for 3 years, and never heard a thing.

Yea the only way you will get caught these days is if an ANPR camera picks you up.

I know a guy who was driving around for months after he forgot to tax his car, even displaying an out of date disc. Nothing ever came of it.

As long as there is tax against the car at the time of checking, no one cares.

Did it for a month once then paid, nothing happened. They never sent a reminder that time hence why I forgot to tax it (I do tax every 6 months).

Crashed a motorbike once and didn't SORN or report it as scrapped and had to pay an £80 fine. Can't remember how long after the fine actually came through though - more than a year for sure.

I forgot to tax wifes Yaris years ago and went online - I taxed it but they backdated it to when it ran out but no fine.

OK well the v5c is in the post with correct address and it's now taxed so based on what everyone is saying I should just wait and see then?

Can you go to your old address to check whether they have already fined you? If not fined then I would stay schtum.
