I did a stupid thing and forgot to put the dust caps back on my my old E46 when I checked the pressures for my sister at the weekend. Now she has gone back up to Manchester and I won't be able to get them to her until this Sunday.

She uses the car everyday so it's inevitable that they are going to get gunk and junk in from a weeks worth of driving, but will this cause any harm to the tyres?

When I put them back on I will use an old tooth brush and some water to make sure they are clean and will dry them before putting the caps back on, will I need to do anything else do you think?

No its more a problem with the valve, the crap gets blown in when you next check the pressures and can cause the valve to leak, before putting the caps on just let air out to blow anything out.

Cheers for the advice guys. Will definitely give them a proper clear out and get the caps back on asap.

In regards to giving them a quick release of air, would I be able to do that with a pressure checker pen thingy or will this still push some of the gunk back inside? How could I release the air without putting anything in.

stick your lips round it and give it a quick suck to clear anything out.
I bet you say that to all the girls ;)

The ones i have on mine hold air. Not sure to what pressure but they screw in with a coin or screw driver and have a rubber seal.

Just phone her and tell her to buy a set of caps for £2 from any Halfords?

Simples!

Don't trust her to clean the gunk out properly and I'll be seeing her on Sunday anyway so might as well do it myself. If there's no harm in leaving it a few more days that is...
