Sister has a 4 yr old macbook pro and has forgot her password and has no installation cd. i have searched the internet and discovered i can put new password in via the command prompt however this machine says
localhost :/ root#
on the instructions and video's on youtube all the prompts have
:/ root# without the localhost in front. So whenever i follow the instructions the prompt remains localhost :/ root'
can someone tell me how i change the path to root' only
sorry if this sounds all jumbled i would appreciate any help

localhost is the machine name.. / is the location... and root is the user your logged in as.. so your in the correct place. :)

there's a much easier way to change the password. Boot up with any OS disk that's the same version of newer than the os on the machine and there's a menu option, this will allow you to change the admin password on the machine, and once your logged in as admin you can change user passwords. IF the machine has file vault switched on for the users, you will not be able to access their files.

Well got dvd held down c get a language box click English the next box i get says mac osx cant be installed on this computer. the only option i get is to restore from backup or restart

even before you get that far... you should get the menu at the top of the screen.. see the link to that guide.

Got 2 dvds mac osx install dvd and applications have turned on comp whilst holding c i dont get the prompts from that link it just gives english language selection and the cant be installed
