My brother very clumsily has forgotten his password for get into his user account on his computer
He has a guest account, which he is using but it is preventing him playing games.
Can I reset the password through the BIOS? i went into the settings the other day and thought that I had solved it, but it hadnt!

Any suggestions?

Cheers, Holly x

You can use the administrator account that is created when you install Windows to remove/change his password.

Note: this isn't the same as an administrator account you create in Control Panel.

In XP Home, you can only log in with this account in safe mode; in XP Pro, you need to press CTRL + ALT + DEL twice to get the classic logon.

At the classic logon screen, you just need to type administrator and press enter. However if you have set a password for this account, or changed the name and can't remember, none of this will work.

Hi Holly,

What Etaqua suggested is probably the best option, but if it doesn't work you could try the following: http://www.loginrecovery.com/

It's a DOS based password revealer from what I can tell - have a look around the website and see what you can find.

Google for "xp password recovery" or something similar will no doubt turn up a lot more possible solutions...

hmm well I tried the classic log on screen administrator trick, but it asked for a passwork and wouldn't continue without one.
I tried "preventing a forgotten password" disc but it asked to enter the current password, and because the only account that works is a guest account, it wont show the admin account.
I was thinking perhaps if I formatted the pc it would re-enable access to everything. Im sure he doesnt have too many important things on there (he's 11).
When I put it into the settings bios menu, it asked me for a password I believe this is the password I created the other week, although I typed that in and it will not accept it.
Would re formatting work? Or will it not allow this on a guest account?
