Would you write a formal email in the same way you'd write a formal letter:

Dear Mr. ______ ,
blah blah blah...

Faithfully
_____ _____

It looks odd seeing an email like that but I'm trying to make a good impression.

I'd write "Yours Faithfully" if I didn't know the person e.g. it was to "Dear Sir" but if you do know them or at least their name then "Yours sincerely" is the more usual form of address. However yes, I'd tend to write a formal email in much the same way as I would do a letter.

What's the female equivalent of "Dear Sir" for a married woman, is it just "Dear Miss"?

Dear Madam - however some people find it somewhat arcane and offensive, then again almost any form of address will offend someone so I'd suggest just using it and if they're that easily upset you'll have saved yourself some later issues in dealing with them.

Surely if you're emailing you know their name?

Not if it's [email protected] or similar.

Dear for someone I don't know, To for someone I've spoken to previously.

Usually end with Regards, Yours Faithfully/Sincerely always looked a bit weird in an email IMO.

Dear Sir NickK,
I have been accidentally given $10,000,0000 ...

:D :p

I would suggest keeping these two books for any formal writing:
1. "Improve your Writing Skills", Collins. This is great it concise and has sections on CVs, letters etc.
2. "The Elements of Style", Strunk & White. This one is a small but internationally renown pocket book. White wrote Charlotte's Web for example.

Thats wrong for a start.

It's either

Dear Sirs

...

Yours faithfully

or

Dear Mr Smith

...

Kind regards

Yours sincerely
