Formal Training - SMB IT Manager

SX, unfortunately
At present I "look after" the database for a company - involves being liaison with the developers and sorting out the easy issues for staff etc.

We have an IT Manager who looks after the basic IT side and a consultancy are 2nd and 3rd Tier.

The IT Manager is leaving in a while and it's been hinted that the role is open to me as I already do holiday cover, and assist with a lot anyway. I said I'd be interested but would want some formal training so they said to find out what and make a business case for it.

Best one I've found is this:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/learning/course.aspx?cid=10967A&loc=en-us

Which as we're planning a major server refresh this year would be ideal as I'd then be running VMs I'd built myself. But I also need something for the Desktop OS side.

Is there a different course that would be a more appropriate starting point? Or should I push for a second course to cover the desktop side?

Thanks :)

Thanks, that looks an interesting one too - I think the server side would be better to do first as the main issues we have with the desktops are not connecting to the network (usually some numpty has connected to an ip phone point instead) or MS Office issues) but that does look like a good followup if I can avoid some of the pre-requisites as for example 6292 is rather expensive.

We're 100% Win 7 Pro

That'll be me with the advice of the consultancy and the current IT Manager.

Fairly simple arrangement to replace 4 existing non-virtualised with hosts running a few VMs.

Major for us but nothing too special really.

I did a Fundamentals of a Windows Server 2008 course and for me it was rubbish as I had been working with 2003 / 2008 server for years and it was really basic and not what I needed at all.

If you've never seen / used servers before then this is the course for you to get introduced to how to install server, shown around AD and basics of how it works.

I like the idea of a fundamentals course to dial out any bad habits I've picked up - but equally I don't want to re-hash what I already know.
