Format now or wait till 10.5 comes out?

Hi

I'm having major beef with my mac book at the moment and the issue seem to have come since updating it to 10.4.10.

Certain programs just quit with out warning like ms word and others such as photoshop don't even want to open.. I can live with out photoshop for now, so do you think I should just leave the format and reinstall till 10.5 comes out as I got shed loads of data thats not been backed up yet.

As a general suggestion (I doubt this could be causing your problems) you shouldn't really be running two different sizes of RAM modules. The MacBook's integrated graphics use the system RAM and not having it running in dual-channel will be giving you a performance hit.

I've also been suffering some quite random crashes since 10.4.10. I re-format didn't fix it for me either. I suggest just waiting until Leopard.

It looks like running those different RAM modules have caused you to Kernel panic judging on that code you posted.

Try it with one stick (the 1GB) and see what happens.

Failing that, just reformat with a full zero-fill and wait for Leopard.

The wierd thing is that it used to work fine.... I think I going to leave it until 10.5 comes out then back up and try an update install, as its will take me too long for me to set it all up for just a few months

You'd be better off wiping completely, rather than upgrading and keeping data intact.

Any hardware related problem is likely to follow you, regardless of the OS

Just try the single stick of RAM, and benchmark it thoroughly overnight.

Do this with both stick individually and you'll soon weed out the failing module

You have got to be kidding? if it is; it will be the first stick of memory thats ever failed me thats worked from new; and not been overclocked/trashed by myself. Hence life time warranty on memory.

To be honest I've ran the AHT a few times, not on soak but it seems fine. Looking at serveal other posts on different sites I few people are having issues like me with PPC software and rosetta itself since upgrading to 10.4.10 or a certain verison of itunes/quicktime. The suggestion was to reinstall 10.4.10 and thats helped some but not others. unfortunately it didn't help me.

What the plan is to do an backup of data

then run an upgrade to see how it reacts after, if the issue is stilll there then I'll be formating it.... need another apple first before the format, as I going to transfer all my data across.

You sure it's not a Rosetta problem seeing as it's Photoshop CS and MS Office? You could try an archive and install and see where that gets you.

When I did an archive and install I didn't really have much, if anything to setup again. It fixed Rosetta for me though.

I have over 700 photo from my bro's wedding.. and editing them for a dvd at the moment. Hence the photoshop

I, too was able to solve this problem, thanks to Boece, by doing the same thing:

1. Using DiskUtility I verified my hard drive and repaired permissions.
2. I downloaded the 10.4.10 Combo Installer onto my desktop (from support site, NOT through Apple Update).
3. Booted into Safe Mode (by holding down Shift key during restart).
4. Immediately did the 10.4.10 install in safe mode.
5. Rebooted.

And Now ROSETTA is back and running !!

I ditched my mac last night!! installed 10.4.10 manually and its all working fine... I've not installed itunes or quicktime update yet due to the time of night I finished installing programs... let hope the programs still work after.
