I need a little help...

My mate gave me his netbook a few months ago to fix but has since told me to keep it as he has a new 1.
When I turn the machine on, it goes to BSOD.
When I connect an external CD Drive to it (As no CD Drive on the netbook) it goes through the Windows repair but then Blue Screens.

How can I fix this issue? I was going to make a boot memory stick but it says I need a mem stick of at least 4gb and the .iso file of XP but only have the XP CD and a 2gb mem stick.

Any advise would be great.
Even to completly wipe the drive and load Linux on would be good :)

I believe Ubuntu provide a 'Netbook version', which can even be easily loaded onto a USB Stick. From memory the requirement is only 2GB, I could be wrong though.

Yes. Providing you either set the BIOS to boot from a USB Memory Stick/Device, or press the hot key to load the "boot select menu" (often F12) and boot from the USB Stick. It'll then run, effectively, as a normal CD/DVD setup would.

Cheers mate :)

Ok, So I have downloaded the ubuntu.iso file for the Netbook and put it on my 2gb memory. I know I am doing something wrong as when I put it into my netbook and boot it up, it says 'Missing Operating System'

What do I need to do to make the USB stick a linux boot drive to install it as my netbook wont even boot into windows.

Thanks

When the bios boots usually around the bottom left or right it will say "press F12 to enter boot menu" or words to that effect, press F12 on the boot screen then on the next screen select to boot from the usb stick.

This works fine on my Toshiba NB100.

How did you put ubuntu on the usb stick?

an XP iso is less than 700mb so i'm not sure why you'd need a 4gb stick. go and look for another guide. :p

(you can save your XP cd as an iso using imgburn)

Just dragged the .iso file straight on to the mem stick
That is why I need to know how to do it correctly...

Nevermind, found and understood everything :)

haha, i'm not really sure how you missed it first time around. :p
