Formatting - any good programs to make this painless?

Windows 8.1 I run and think i will use for my laptop or linu - i was thinking of Windows server 2012 for this main pc. AS long as it;s 8* based. i wanna learnservers too.

I've too much all installed on a 500gb hdd. i wanna shrink and move to a 256 (80+150 windows-userdata partition) but too long so I might do this insted. I wanna snap all my progs installed so they are easy to find. I wanna keep a lot of settings and outlooks options but i will run both 8.1+2012 on diff drives till i finish up and format the 500gb.

Is it always worth installing LAN drivers and audio? even if they already work? installed each asus program for mobo?

I have Asus mobo, msi 280/6950, bmc (htpc,media server), usenet, web browser and it's idle 24/7 mining coins.

I like ninite for mass installing some programs. once i finish i wanna backup all the C:/ then stick games on. I will run a vmware machine or something incase I wanna try things in future.

Shall I do that or i run vmware and 2012 inside? can i backup vmwares server and restore to the host machine or even install win server on main o/s then migrate some settings from vmware and old 8.1 setup?222

I might give new account under windows 8.1 a go for now, see if i can tweak some things win 8 runs everything i remember server had driver problems
