Formatting External Hard Drive

yup got them all installed and still nothing. It's really frustrating the hell outta me as I don't get whats wrong :S
 
I think the next step, and I know it might be a pain, is going to be to try the drive connected directly to an internal SATA port.
 
I've finally managed to get time to do what you advised mate, and unfortunately it's the same crappy problem.
Does this mean the drives buggered or have I missed a blatantly obvious step?
