Hi all, Im selling my Macbook pro and I'm unsure how to wipe it clean before selling?

Do i need to create a back up dvd in order to format? or is it something inside the os?

Any help appreciated!

Does the recovery partition allow the secure erasing of a machine? I've never used it.

To securely erase your machine (which you should do to anything with an HDD/SSD if you're selling it) make sure you back up anything you don't want to lose. If you didn't get any discs with it, create a bootable USB version of Mavericks by downloading Mavericks through the App Store and using Lion Disk Maker. Once that is done, reboot to the Mavericks USB and open disk utility. Securely erase the HDD/SDD through that by zeroing out the disk.

There's a secure erase option in the disk utilities section of the recovery partition. It also downloads and installs mavericks for you so I don't think there's a need to make a usb. Haven't used those particular features myself though.

Ah. If the recovery partition has the disk utilities section then yes, he won't need to make a USB. I just always make a USB because I like having a hard copy on physical media.

So OP you can do it either way, whichever is easiest for you. Just make sure you securely erase your machine through disk utilities before you reinstall the OS.
