Morning,

I've got a 2014 Alienware 14 laptop and its about time I did a fresh install, its really started to slow down recently.

I'm pretty certain its been sluggish ever since I upgraded to Windows 10, but that could be physiological!

My question to you gurus - What OS is more resource friendly, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10?

Not sure if it matters but the laptop is mostly used for light gaming e.g Total war, Cities:Skylines etc

to be honest I have used windows 8.1 and 10 and they are both fine for gaming (using 8.1 now).

do you like W10? are you happy with it? if so re install W10 but make sure your current version of w10 is activated before you do anything otherwise your clean install will not activate.

you can use the W10 download tool to create a bootable USB stick

If you only upgraded without doing a fresh install of 10 afterwards then that may be why its sluggish.

Fresh install makes all the differences so do what ED209 said. Create a bootable media whether it be a disk or USB and fresh install 10.

Main thing to note - don't enter a serial when asked as it will activate as soon as it connects to the internet based on the upgrade you already did.

Yeh I upgraded and didn't do a fresh install the first time!

My fresh 8.1 install is now installing W10!

I used Win8.1 since day one and was happy with it,Win10 I did the upgrade on day one and happy with that as well, seems touch faster then 8.1 which was no slouch.

I would go with Win10 due to DX12, important if you are a gamer, longer life support.

Both of mine were upgrades from 8.1 to 10 but I use Glary's Utilities,System Ninja,System Mechanic 14.6 to clear out all the old left over crap including registry files, also used Windows disk cleanup to remove the old "Windows.old" folder.
