Forum and CMS

I'm looking to setup something of a forum/portal. I know vbulletin integrates with wordpress, but is there the capability there to setup the front page as a portal, showing latest posts, latest photo uploads, the ability to vote/comment on photos, full user profiles etc..?

Are there any other platforms I should be looking at?

Infact you can have all done (forum/portal/etc) done in wordpress itself. Just search for wordpress forum plugin ( one good e.g is bbpress.org)

You could also consider something like Nuke Xtreme that is PHP based and it has built in
forums, you can install coppermine to it for a photo gallery which people can comment on
everyone who registers on the site automatically gets a profile which if you know how you
can change some of the headings on the profile to fit what you need.
