Forum notifications and emails

I've tried various settings in the profile settings, but it seems I'm not clever enough to switch off the email notifications and still have the little bell notification (top right) in the forum.

I know when starting a new thread I can select an option, but how can I do this on threads I reply to, or apply as a global setting?

Can anyone help me with this, I'm feeling like what I'm sure my dad used to feel (old)

After some more testing I am still either

• getting the little red number on the bell AND an email,
• or no notifications at all.

I can't find the right settings that just give me the red number on the bell without getting an email.

It's weirdly comforting to know someone else has issues, simply so I know I'm not being 100% stupid.
95% is acceptable
