my forum on my webserver (dreamhost) can be very slow, sometime when i click anything on my forum, it takes more than 5 seconds to loading the page. sometime its fast.

to be honest, i dont know if its speed of hosting or the actual forum i built is pile of poo. even empty forum can be slow! i wouldnt be surprised if its the hosting cos its so cheap, 20GB data, 1TB transfer per month. i uploaded a large file and downloaded it at 350kbps. tbh i'd expected more than this. like up to 800kbps or above

i really want really speedy forum like here OCUK. just been looking around for a decent UK hosting. one of them caught my eyes is vidahost. starter package i think cost £15 a year. what's client account? is cpanel easy to use? is 100MB data big enough for a forum can hold up to 1000 users?

know any hosting that can do same speed as OCUK forum (here :p )

Dreamhost place usage limits and with running the hosting they offer I'd expect their resources can be stretched at times (since they attract high usage sites which will kick servers to pieces, then Dreamhost rightly suspend.)

You could try asking to move servers - they're a good bunch of people :)

The data transfer speed is mostly related to the server contention and distance...I think they're on West coast USA which is quite a distance and is beginning to show as the UK gets high-speed broadband connections. You can solve it by using a download manager and running multiple connections, though. Their network may also be satuated, since file download sites don't use too much CPU time so don't get suspended, but they may clog the network.

Edit: Also I think you're getting confused with Vidahost and Tsohost :) Both have UK servers so should give you the same speed as these forums, as should any other host with UK-based servers.

And to be fair, I guess I should mention that these forums are hosted by Serverstream, who are also on ochostreview :)

Edit2: And all 3 of the above are owned/run by OcUK members (Vidahost by me) and I'm only mentioning Vidahost to clear up the error/confusion. I normally prefer to hide away from these threads now.

thanks Beansprout

would u say if 100MB is big enough for 1,000 users? the forum i want to make is aim for deaf people in UK talking about technologies for deaf people, ie, flashing doorbell, freeview box with good subtitle etc. so speed and reliability are the most important.

will use dreamhost to host large pic/video.

you'll hit a wall with database size.

its likely that your database will be about 5mb and my punbb installation for 60 people takes up well over that.

Where did you pull 5Mb from, I've not heard that before :/

1,000 users isn't really a problem - what makes the database size is the number of posts.

Still, even 100Mb is probably about 40,000 posts depending on their size, so you'll be fine. I wouldn't imagine you'll need 1Gb - that's getting on for a million posts or so.

if i sign up starter package, monthly contract but will i keep the domain for a year if i cancel/move to differnet hosting?

If you ignore the domain cost and Paypal fees :(

I think I can buy a few one penny sweets and maybe afford some bread for lunch, though:)

Vidahost has UK servers now?
