Several to choose from the most popular are phpBB, SMF and MyBB.

I'd suggest you get each one, upload it to a different folder and have a play. They all have different features so see which suits you the best. Personally I use phpBB as it does what I need it to do.

i dont need anything fancey, aslong as i can make my own button pictures etc without converting to a weird format. And a good admin system ill be happy.

I have set up a few PHPBB forums, and one word of advice - Set up the groups properly first, as it makes it much much easier in the long run!

Ill give it a few attempts to get it right :D

does it need a SQL database?
could i use the one i used for wordpress account?

going to try phpBB first, 22 hours till it finishes uploading 2.7mb:(

why is it taking so long? who is your site hosted with? most web hosts have a section in the control panel where you can do an auto install of scripts such as phpbb

My site is for my local kart club, it is hosted by www.scottishkarting.co.uk, there site a home server. So i expect it to be slow:P
no cpanel or nothing :( but i do have a lot of bandwith and features.

PHPBB is top of the three listed.
MyBB is poor,
SMF is bad on security.

My Votes

PHPBB 3.x
Or vBulletin

You are set to be the main admin aren't you? There must be an error if it is not allowing you to do so. It can be a steep learning curve at first!

In forum management make a new forum.

Type: category
No parent.

Then make another forum.
Type:forum
Parent: the category you just made.

Then you need to set permissions so everyone can see it
Admin control panel>Permissions>Groups forum permissions.
Set the registered users to be able to see and post in it.

Although they tend to use out of date versions or ones with built in errors from their own installer scripts. For example, if you use fantastico and you have an upper case letter in your password, it will translate that as lower case so your 'real' password won't work. Nice.

Thats why I shifted over to Installatron - shed load better than Fantastico, more up to date scripts and no 'features' like the password one you mentioned!

SMF is bad on security.

Based on what? I switched from phpBB to SMF a few years ago and have never looked back. The phpBB I had back then was terrible for security and got hacked twice despite being up to date. I believe the new one is a lot better now so cant really comment but can say Ive never had a problem with SMF to date.

phpBB hasn't had any security issues for about 7 years. The vast majority of hacks come from other server loopholes or out of date modifications.

My gosh I wish I had used phbBB when I first set up my forums years back. I would like to move on to something new, but my members are all old farts and if they had to re-register they would probably have a conniption. Besides I'm lazy. If activity picks up I'll probably switch to vBulletin.

Because of my stupid forum software, I don't have any way of using Captcha or anything for spam protection, so I have to manually preview accounts. Luckily there aren't that many new registrations. As I find multiple spammers coming in from the same locations, I keep adding them to my ban filters. For anyone interested, here are my current blocked domains:
