I cleaned my car this morning and while doing so I noticed a small rust mark on the roof which had be hidden under some dirt

I was wondering what the best way to deal with this is? I assume I should at least treat it in some way to stop it getting any worse.

A dab of rust killer and some touch up paint, not much you can do without spending £100's with a bodyshop.

Thanks, would something like this be the correct sort of thing?

That's the stuff I used. :)

How far should I sand? Do I keep going until the rust is gone or just get the paint around it off?

While you're at Halfords, get yourself a multi-pack of wet n' dry.

You won't need to use the coarse stuff but the finer (800/1000 grit) should clean it up a bit.

Just sand until you are at bare rust.
the deox c will do the rest and you dont really need to worry about getting it on paint.
Its amazing stuff and will turn the rust to metal good and proper. Far better than kurust etc would.

It's not really amazing, it is merely citric acid, which you can buy far cheaper in bulk off ebay.

http://s126.photobucket.com/albums/p115/Galifrey/?action=view&current=IMAG0034.jpg is apicture of a former boat anchor (subaru brake caliper) after one treatment of citric acid, the rest of the heavy scaling was removed by the second immersion in 10% citric acid solution.

Other rust treatments use similar concentrates of other Organic Acids such as Formic and Muric acid, but they all do the same thing, turn the rust into something that can be removed or painted over without damaging the metal.

I would block sand that rust and a small surrounding area with p800 wet and dry, paint with your chosen rust treatment, use stopper to fill any minor pits, and then prime, flat, paint, flat with p1500 wet and dry, lacquer, flat and polish. If it is small enough you may get away with one of the chip fill paints, but you will need to ensure you remove a small amount of the surrounding paint to ensure it doesn't continue to rust underneath.

The alternative is to prepare the surface, treat the rust, and then get a smart repair to the paint.

That citric acid works ok and all but when I see some of the stuff people have used detox c on it works a little better imo.
Having said that based on what you have said I will be getting citric acid as its like you say way cheaper

Edit actually after reviewing said images that stuff is day bomb
The gel is still handy though
