So found a locked iPhone 5s on the street this morning. Near perfect condition, its on Vodaphone with a 3g signal. But its locked by passcode, what can I do? Hand it in at Vodaphone?

The right thing to do would be to take it to Voda shop they may be able to trace the owner - until then it may have track my iphone enabled and get a nice message on screen sometime when they realise its gone

I'd avoid taking it to the police station because they will only keep it for a limited time.

What about contacting Vodafone to see if they have a way of helping?

Handed in to local Vodafone store, they said they'll trace the owner from the sim, inform them and they can pick it up from the store. Not my problem now. But I'm certainly going to put a notification on my own lock screen with return details now!

This. Police will not give any priority or active duty time whatsoever to making enquiries to track the owner of a lost phone. (they took over 15 hours to remove a woman freezing to death on my doorstep once.) The phone will be put on someone's desk and then nabbed or binned after no one obviously comes in to claim it.

Contact Vodafone and see what they say. In the mean time wait and hope someone calls it.

Edit: just saw post above, good man :)

A polite note to android users, under security settings its super easy to add a note to your lockscreen where you can place contact details etc in case of this kind of event. I have done this now!

If you are a cruel person you change the text to "Connect your charger." It'll take your sister-in-law ages to work out what is wrong with her phone ;)
