Four pin power plug on Motherboard

Hi - I'm in the process of getting items for a new system and want to test a 2nd hand gfx card in my old computer. The GFX card has a 6 and 8 pin power adaptors but the old psu hasn't got the 8 pin one. I've got a new PSU but the old motherboard has 24 pin and also a four pin ATX_12V plug which I think is for the CPU. Needless to say the new PSU hasn't got the 4 pin plug. What do you reckon - will the board boot without the four pin one? Any thoughts of how to do this? Board is Gigabyte Ga 965p Ds3. I could do with testing the card as I'm endlessly waiting for the cpu for new system to arrive.

Looks to me like it wouldn't boot.

Ok so I’ve put the psu in connected everything up. When I turn it on at the back there’s a brief blue light from the led. Then I press the front button and absolutely nothing. I’m pretty sure I’ve connected everything up inc motherboard 24 and 4pin cpu. Hmmm any thoughts?

I suppose next step is replug old psu in and see if it works?

No gpu hdd will it still do something in those cases?

Ok with old psu in it, it posts gets to ‘disk boot failure insert system disk’ and won’t let me select hdd in bios as if it isn’t there. With new psu no signs of life at all.

This is odd just tried the paper clip test with new psu and it turned on do it appears to be working

I admit it’s a bit of a puzzler. To recap:

New psu seems to me to be plugged in properly have checked numerous times. Press front button - absolutely nothing. Have done paper clip test and seems to be working.

Old psu back in does work but now computer trying to boot and doesn’t seem to be able to find hdd.

Firstly I’d like to work out why the new psu doesn’t seem to show any life when I try to turn it on.
