Sony has revealed the date on when it plans to launch a fourth version of the mighty PlayStation 2 later this year. The console was originally unveiled last year and is said to be sleeker and slimmer with no external AC adapter. We didn't think it could get any smaller. Or needed to...

The new model will simultaneously be released in the European and Indian markets, SCE country manager Atindriya Bose revealed to ET.

It's being called a 'higher-end version' and is said to be slimmer, sleeker and "more suave in its looks". There'll be no external power supply and the price will remain the same. "PS2 is an entry-level console, which helps first timers to enter the gaming zone," Bose explained.

SCE India will also be launching the PlayStation Network for PS3 in India, though don't the 2.4 update to be on it yet though. "The PlayStation network is ready for India. It is only the integration of the payment gateway that needs to be done," said Bose, adding it will launch by the end of the firm's fiscal year.

Of the 120-million install base for PS2, a whopping 3.4 million are in India alone. "We feel PS2 has the potential to penetrate further into the Indian and Russian markets. Console gaming is in its nascent stage in India. These are untapped markets and are new to the gaming world, hence we have no plans to phase out PS2 anytime soon.

"We do not market it as a PS2 or PS3. It is the experience of the PS that we market. PS3 is for the next generation. People who are first timers in the gaming market want to pick up PS2 and experience that, before upgrading to PS3."

Does anyone think this could fit inside a ps3 for their next backwards compatability plan?

as they've stopped backwards compatibility quite a few people will be getting one now their ps2s broken/worn out with age.

IMO the PS2 slim failed completely by having a flip lid. The joy of the front loading PS2 was that it could be wedges into a small slot somewhere. Having a slot loading slim would be awsome!

But i suppose slot drives cost a lot more, and a low price wins over practicality with this kind of product.

I wasn't sure if they were adding anything to it or not, so, I asked. No need for the attitude..

Weeeeeeell, it's gone even smaller, so I doubt it would have been able to have the increased capacity for extra features and the like. If they've added anything to it we would have known by now, especially as it's been out in Japan for ages already.

You can buy DVD players for as low as £30-50 that upscale DVD's to 720p. I don't see why they couldn't just upgrade to take advantage of HD tvs.

Is there really much need for this 4th design like? the ps2 slimline is already small enough like.

People are very susceptible to redesigns, especially of valued electronics that get used a lot. It's not that far off buying a newer, slimmer mobile phone to replace your existing one. A lot of people like to strive for having the most aesthetically pleasing hardware in their homes.
