Firefox and Foxit Reader (Two Foxes)

I've noticed a problem with downloading and viewing PDF files in Firefox. I note that Foxit Reader has released a new version to fix a security matter. I have, today, installed the latest version.

My problem, both before and after the update, is that I can't download or view PDF files directly into Foxit Reader. In: Firefox > Tools > Option under Content Type: PDF Document, I have the choice of using Foxit Reader Document (default) or Use The Foxit Plug-in for Mozilla.

When I have it set to Use the default and I click on a PDF Document on the web using Firefox, The PDF Download 3.0.0.2 Bar appears, giving me 4 options, download, to view, etc

When I opt for download nothing happens, likewise when I opt to view.

If I go back to Firefox, Tools and change from Firefox default to The Firefox Plug in, the download still doesn't download but I am able to view it on the web and if necessary use "Save As" to download the document.

I'm using Windows XP and I don't really know when the problem started, I've recently upgraded Firefox to Firefox 18.

Stored PDF documents on my computer do open with Foxit Reader.

Can anyone advise me what might be going wrong?

Thanx

Thanx Guys:

KIA, I think the update yesterday (which I installed) fixed the vulnerability?

I'm afraid Rolling back would be beyond my capabilities!

I'll have a look at Sumatra. There is a "Reset Firefox" option but just looking at that frightens the life out of me, especially as it will remove aspects which are working fine, like my printer etc.

Thanx again for your help. Looking around Google it states that Firefox 19 Beta is in existence. If Sumatra doesn't work it might suggest that Firefox is the culprit.

Unfortunately Sumatra acts in the same way as Foxit. The only way I can view PDF in Firefox is to use the Plug in. It's annoying because each time Firefox starts it defaults to Firefox or Sumatra (depending on what's installed), so if I click a PDF I get the option bar and when I make my selection nothing happens. I then have to go back into Firefox Tools select the plug-in then I can view it on the web and use "Save As" if necessary.

I ran Registry Mechanic yesterday it found about 230 Registry Errors but I didn't choose to have any of them fixed but I did notice that a few of them referred to Foxit Reader. A couple of years ago I ran Registry Mechanic, used it to fix everything, I then found that something or other wouldn't work and I had to restore from backup. Since then I've left it alone.

Thanx again

Yes, it was fixed. It was in response to bertles86. The Sumatra browser plug-in is optional. I would remove every instance of Foxit including any plug-ins and do a clean install of Sumatra without the plug-in.

Registry tools are trash and do more harm than good. :)

Thanx again guys. I uninstalled Foxit and Sumatra, cleaned out the bits and pieces left in the program files (Foxit). I then opened Firefox, Tools, Options and against PDF neither program was shown.

I reinstalled Sumatra without the plug in, now when I try to download or save a PDF, the bar appears, on clicking save I can see at the bottom left of my screen "Waiting for www. etc" that displays for a second or two but nothing happens, it's the same with view. So I can neither download nor view PDF documents without a plug in. I'll have to uninstall Sumatra and install it with the plug in. It wouldn't be too bad if the plug in was set to default, then when I click download or view the plug in would kick in unfortunately it doesn't so I then have to go back to Tools, Options and select the plug in. Perhaps it's just my computer? If other Firefox users were having the same problem I'm sure it would be splashed across the Internet.

Thanx again

Yes Thanx Bertless86, that works OK, but I did prefer the "Bar" as an option, perhaps they will update it in the future.

Thanx again
