If I connect the ps3 through HDMI and select 1:1 pixel mapping, then i get black bands att he top and bottom of the screen - is this normal?

Yes, that is what pixel mapping does. 1 pixel input will display as one pixel on the screen. It will not stretch the picture to fit the screen.
