FPS dips? Throttling?

Hey guys,

Just finished a quick sesh of BF1. But during the 35min game, my FPS hovering around and between 75-105, Which is fine..a couple of times got a little laggy and dropped to the 60's..:( for 5-10 seconds..

I checked AfterBurner after the game and OK, the GPU was screaming to keep cool (RX 480 blower cooler) but the max temp was 67c and averaging around 64-65c for the most part.

And the CPU (i5 7500) was maxing at 54c and averaging low 50's..

Should I be looking at a slightly beefier card? And if I went for a non-reference cooler..(which I like as it expels heat right through the back end) would it still be reasonable temps in the case, eg. for the CPU?

Cheers guys!

Have you checked your RAM usage? How much RAM have you got?

That CPU is a little on the weak side, you might be maxing it out, worth checking CPU usage during the dips too.

I don’t think temps are your issue.

Never thought to check RAM, will do that next time I get the issue. Its only 2133MHz RAM but I do have 16gb of it.

Yeah, I have been contemplating an upgrade (maybe a 7700K). When I have checked AfterBurner my usage of CPU / GPU are at 100% a lot of the time..

Should I look at upgrading both, or could my CPU be holding back my GPU also?

Check Afterburners graphs and monitor for GPU, CPU, VRAM, RAM and Pagefile usage. Likely that one is holding the rest up causing the holdbacks - happens to me quite a bit in certain games.

Is it 4GB or 8GB VRAM? The type of sustained stutter you describe can sometimes be attributed to exhausting VRAM.

Upgrading CPU, hopefully helps.

The GPU had 8gb VRAM, my new 580 has 4gb VRAM, but same FPS.

I dont think the 16gb RAM or GPU is the issue? Mabye :confused:

Will report back once the new CPU is installed.

I've noticed in the past online Battlefield games really do tax my CPU (Core i5 3570k), threading is particularly impressive in Frostbite engine games IMO so I wouldn't bother with another quad core. I would be looking at a Ryzen 1600x/2600X at the very least or a Ryzen 2700x/Core i7 8700k.

BTW,is the game being run off an SSD or an HDD??

Its a Samsung SSD mate.

I ordered a i7 7700 so im now unsure weather to install or get a refund and go 6 /8 core??:confused:

You really have thrown a spanner in the works mate!! :p:p

Do you have positive airflow to the case?
Either way since you have such cooler, and these days are warm, open the case.

RX480 and RX580 are basically the same card, I wouldn't expect to see any meaningful difference between the two.

Since upgrading the CPU I have increased on the same map / players (BattleField 1 a 32 man server) from an average FPS of 80-90 to 110-125 with the lowest dip up from 60 odd to 90 odd.
